Everest Base Camp Helicopter Return Trek Overview
Flying back in a helicopter is the quickest, easiest, and most luxurious return to Kathmandu after a 40-mile ascent from Lukla to Mount Everest Base Camp. One ideal package is the Everest Base Camp Trek with a helicopter return.
We designed this combined trek and heli trip for those who are under time constraints and don’t want to exert their bodies harshly through long days of trekking activity.
Unlike the standard EBC Trek, it gives you the flexibility of not walking to the endpoint again after Gorakshep and then taking a domestic flight. Instead, you will fly back in a helicopter to Kathmandu directly.
On a standard EBC trip, the total distance you hike, including day hikes and side trips, is 127–130 km. But in this package, you will only hike 65 km (40 miles), which is almost half the distance from the standard 14-day trip.
Thus, the primary advantage of this helicopter tour is that you not only bypass the lengthy trekking from Gorak Shep to Lukla but also escape the hassle of getting on a domestic flight.
Also referred to as the EBC Heli Return Trek, the 12-day itinerary includes both trekking and a helicopter flight. First, you start as usual with a flight to Lukla, either from Ramechhap or Kathmandu, and then trek to Everest base camp.
Finally, after you achieve the remarkable feat of being at the base of the highest mountain, you make your way to Gorak Shep to spend the night. The next morning, you will visit Kala Patthar and then take a helicopter flight after breakfast at the guesthouse in Gorak Shep.
From the flight, you get an aerial view of the highest mountains, Gokyo lakes, Khumbu glacier, Sagarmatha National Park, and other major highlights of the region before you land at the Kathmandu airport.
The Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return is an ideal trip for you if you
- are under the constraint of time. You have just 12 days’ free time, but you still want to trek to base camp.
- want to experience a helicopter ride over the snow-clad mountains of Everest.
- need a relaxing way to see the EBC with a return journey on a chopper.
- want to enjoy the picturesque view of the Everest region.
- you don’t want to excite yourself by walking from Lukla to Everest Base Camp for days on end.
Here’s what the trip will look like:
Here’s what our Everest Base Camp Trek, with a helicopter return itinerary, looks like.
The day-to-day itinerary until Everest Base Camp is the same as it’s in the classic trek. Then you opt out for a flight back instead of trekking back.
The itinerary begins with a flight to Lukla Airport, followed by a jovial walk along a well-paved path to Phakding village.
The following day, the trail traverses into the Sagarmatha National Park and passes some interesting villages like Monjo, Jorsalle, and Namche.
After spending a day for acclimatization in Namche Bazaar, the trail ascends to Tengboche and then to Dingboche. No matter how high you go, you will always find the mountains closer to you.
Likewise, after an extra acclimatization day in Dingboche, you ascend to Lobuche village, cross Thukla Pass, and then walk to Gorakshep, the endpoint of the lodges.
On the same day of reaching Gorakshep, you make your way to the final destination, the Everest Base Camp, via the Khumbu glacier. After spending some time there, you descend to Gorakshep to spend the night. This will be your last night in Everest.
The next morning, after a short hike to Kala Patthar, you will descend to your guesthouse, have breakfast, and then wait for the helicopter on the helipad, which is 50 meters away from the settlement. Ultimately, after the helicopter arrives, our team will transport you back to Kathmandu.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) recently proposed a rule in spring 2023 that they don’t allow helicopters to carry over two passengers from Gorakshep. Thus, if more trekkers fly in the same direction, they fly each individual to Pheriche first and then transport everyone to Kathmandu collectively. A helicopter can carry only five passengers in total from the Everest area with a weight limit of 500 kg, including their stuff.
Tours to Everest Base Camp with Chopper Return
The Everest Base Camp Trek with a helicopter return is the perfect tour for those who want to trek but end the trip in the most relaxing way. This trip can be costly and not everyone wants to spend a lot on a single trip.
Relax; we got you covered as well. For you, we have the Everest Base Camp Heli Shuttle Trek.
Here, the helicopter will fly you back to Lukla instead of Kathmandu. And, after spending a night in Lukla, you will catch a domestic flight to either Kathmandu or Ramechhap. This is also a budget-friendly way to escape trekking downhill from Gorakshep to Lukla.
If you want to opt out of the trip, then write to us here.
Moreover, you can also choose to catch a helicopter flight from either Lobuche, Pheriche, Namche, Everest View Hotel, Monjo, or Lukla. You can choose to catch a flight from anywhere in Everest where there’s a helipad.
Alternate Routes
Everest Base Camp Heli Trek is a super combo of trekking and flyback on a chopper. But if you want only a trekking journey, you can go on an EBC Trek Package. Also, we have the Everest Base Camp Luxury Trek to give you ample room for luxury, and if you prefer the helicopter tour only, you can go for our Mount Everest Helicopter Tour.
We always have options for all trekking and tours in Nepal. Our other options to hike to Everest include:
Option 1: If you love lakes and water systems, then there’s no better alternative for you than the Gokyo Lakes Trek. It’s a 12-day journey to Gokyo Valley on Everest.
Option 2: A third alternative that involves a challenging trekking route is the Chola Circuit Trek. We highly recommend this trek, as it involves a trip to Gokyo Lakes and then crossing a high mountain pass with a trip to base camp.
Option 3: If you have enough time and want to experience a strenuous, long trekking journey, then the Everest Three High Passes Trek is the best alternative for you. With this 20-day travel package, you hike to Gokyo Lakes, three high mountain passes, and then to base camp.
Option 4: If you are looking for an easy hike for a week to appreciate the glory of Mount Everest, then we have the Everest Panorama View Trek. It’s a 7-day journey for beginners with no long trekking hours and a chance of getting altitude sickness.

The trail takes you through a rugged path along with some charming Sherpa villages to high-elevation regions in the lap of the world’s highest mountain, Everest.
The glory of the trek doesn’t end with Mt. Everest but extends to pinnacles of other high mountains like Mt. Everest, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Lhotse Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Cho-Oyu, Mt. Thamserku, Mt. Tawache and many others.”
A representative from our team will be waiting for you at the arrival terminal of Kathmandu airport. Make sure that you look after a person with your nameplate! The representative will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu.
As you check into the hotel, the representative will give you a short synopsis of our plans for the Everest Base Camp Trek with a helicopter return to Kathmandu.
Tonight, spend your time at a hotel in Kathmandu.
The sightseeing tour in Kathmandu includes a guided tour of the artistic, historical, and cultural monuments around Kathmandu city that have been listed under the UNESCO World Heritage Site charts. Today, after breakfast, your tour guide will pick you up for a city tour.
The day tour starts at Patan Durbar Square, a historical palace that dates back to the 16th century during the Malla reign in the medieval period of Nepal. The palace is a huge complex with a palace, courtyards, and temples.
After we explore the perimeter of the palace and visit a museum inside the palace, we head to the Swayambhunath stupa, a large stupa placed on a hilltop surrounded by various Buddha statues and monasteries.
Next, we drive to Pashupatinath Temple, the oldest Hindu temple with many temples and statues that date back to ancient times.
Finally, we head to the Boudhanath Stupa, a huge stupa placed on a three-layered Mandela.
We visit all these beautiful heritage sites and end our day with a drive back to your hotel. This is also the day for shopping in Kathmandu. If you need any gear for your Everest Base Camp Trek with helicopter return, you can get it in Kathmandu.
Tonight, spend your time at a hotel in Kathmandu.
We pick you up in the early morning and escort you to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport. Here, we catch a flight that will take us to Lukla Airport in the Khumbu region of Nepal.
The region is probably one of the most loved and frequented trekking regions in Nepal. It takes pride in having the world’s highest mountain, i.e., Mount Everest. The flight to Lukla is full of magnificent mountain views. As you land in Phakding, meet our remaining crew in Lukla for your journey ahead.
From Lukla, our Everest Base Camp Trek with a helicopter return package starts. We then follow a trail that drops down to the Dudhkoshi River and goes up gradually along a well-marked path to Phakding.
Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Phakding.
The days ahead will be more interesting. As we leave Phakding, we follow a trail that traverses through Sagarmatha National Park. We march ahead through a forested area enriched with various species of flora and fauna.
On the way to Namche, we pass through interesting Sherpa villages like Monjo and Jorsale. The trail from Phakding to Namche undulates many times, up and down. It can be quite tiring, but the pristine air, amazing views, and the quest to reach the top of the world will keep you going.
Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Namche.
Today, you are at Namche, which means you are already at a height of around 3440 meters. Therefore, we stop and take our time acclimatizing in Namche.
Namche Bazaar is a vibrant town in the Khumbu region. It is the only gateway to Everest, and it is teeming with hotels, lodges, cyber cafes, shops, and other amenities.
After breakfast in the guesthouse, we hike up to the Everest View Hotel. You will see some fascinating views of mountains like Mt. Everest, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Cho-Oyu, Mt. Thamserku, Mt. Tawache, and many more from the hotel balcony.
After spending some time there, we make our way back to Namche. On our way, we also visit a photo gallery, a museum, and a few Sherpa villages.
Tonight, we will stay at a guesthouse in Namche.
Leaving Namche, we follow a trail that climbs up to Tengboche at an elevation of 3860 meters. It’s an easy way up to Tengboche and the route offers some incredible views of Mt. Everest, along with other mountains like Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Lobuche, and many other adjacent peaks. At first, we descend to the Dudhkoshi valley at Pungi Thanka and slowly ascend to Tengboche.
At Tengboche, we visit a popular monastery known as the Tengboche monastery. It is an old Buddhist monastery on the way to Everest. It is not just known for its spiritual significance but also for its amazing location. One can see the great Mt. Ama Dablam rising just above the monastery.
Likewise, the views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Lobuche, and many other mountains in the region look magnificent from here.
Tonight, we will stay at a guesthouse in Tengboche.
Moving ahead from Tengboche, we follow a trail that descends to the Imja River. From the river, we follow a scenic trail full of mountain views and picturesque landscapes to Pangboche village.
The village, at an elevation of 3900 meters, is in a dramatic location with appealing views of mountains in the backdrop. Enjoying the majestic views of mountains like Mt. Everest, Mt. Amadablam, and Mt. Lhotse, we ascend to the pastures of Dingboche.
We pass various pastures and summer settlements of yak herders until we reach the vast pasture of Dingboche. Dingboche is also referred to as the "summer valley."
In winter, it is fully covered by snow, but in summer, it looks wonderful with grassland and yaks herding in it.
Tonight, we will stay at a guesthouse in Dingboche.
As we ascend to the high-elevation region each trekking day, we need to acclimatize to ensure our health and safety. Hence, today we will stay in Dingboche for acclimatization. In the daytime, after breakfast, we hike up to Nagerjun.
At an elevation of 5,100 meters, Nagerjun is a beautiful viewpoint that lies just above Dingboche on the edge of the Chhukung Valley. As we walk towards Nagerjun, the trail gets steeper, which makes walking a bit difficult. However, the spellbinding views of the mountains from Nagerjun make the walk worthwhile.
From Nagerjun, we will relish some amazing views of Lobuche peaks, Thamserku, Taboche, Kangtega, Mt. Ama Dablam, and many other peaks in the range. The hike is also an opportunity to get a stunning glimpse of Mt. Makalu, the fifth-highest peak in the world. After some refreshing moments at the top, we drop to Dingboche for the night.
Tonight, we will stay at a guesthouse in Dingboche.
With time, we are getting closer to Everest Base Camp. Today, we leave Dingboche and make our way to Lobuche, at an elevation of 4910 meters.
From Dingboche, we follow the trail that takes us to the wide valley until we reach Dughla. From here, we move ahead to the Trekkers' Aid Post at Pheriche, at an elevation of 4240 meters. There, we can see a few Western doctors treating the trekkers voluntarily.
Continuing our walk, we pass the valley and some yak pastures on the way before reaching Lobuche.
Tonight, we will spend our time at a guesthouse in Lobuche.
Finally, the wait is over. We are on one of the most anticipated days of our entire trekking journey.
After breakfast in Lobuche, we walk towards Gorakshep and then to Everest Base Camp, the base camp of the world’s highest mountain. It is a moment of pride for anyone. We explore the area and witness the glory of the mountains that rise just before us. This is the last trekking day of your Everest Base Camp Trek with a helicopter return.
Though Mt. Everest is hidden between Mt. Lhotse and Mt. Nuptse, the views of the other mountains are simply incredible.
As we explore the base camp and capture the moment in photos, we return to Gorakshep for an overnight stay. Tomorrow is the day we are waiting for.
Tonight, we will spend our time at a guesthouse in Gorakshep.
It is another most-awaited day of our trekking journey. In the early morning, we wake up and hike to Kala Patthar.
Kala Patthar is one of the renowned viewpoints in the Everest region of Nepal. It is popular for sunrise views and panoramic views of mountains in the Everest region, including the mighty Mt. Everest.
From Kala Patthar, we catch the golden rays of the sun falling over the glittering snow of Mt. Everest, along with other towering peaks in the range. We descend to Gorakshep after spending some time at Kala Patthar.
A helicopter will pick us up at the helipad near Gorakshep settlements and fly us over the Everest region.
The helicopter ride will provide us with some incredible views of mountains, Gokyo lakes, Khumbu glaciers, Sagarmatha National Park, and many other attractions in the Everest region. Then, we fly back on the same helicopter to Kathmandu.
Upon landing at the Kathmandu airport, we will transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu.
Tonight, spend your time at a hotel in Kathmandu.
This is the end of your Everest Base Camp Trek with a helicopter return. Today, you will have two options: either fly home from Kathmandu or continue your travels to some other destinations around the globe.
We will drop you off at the airport three hours before your scheduled flight. We hope you had a great time with us.

The best time for the Everest Base Camp trek with a helicopter return is late March to May and mid-October to November.
Usually, March to May and September to November are considered the best times to go to Everest, but in recent years, the monsoon has shifted by a month and a half.
In 2023, September and the prior week of October experienced continuous rains in Everest, blocking the views and leading to helicopter flight cancellations. This has been repeated for two years now and climate activists blame this on climate change.
We don’t want you to get stuck in the Everest area or not have clear views from your helicopter window.
Thus, our recommended best times would be late March–early May and mid-October–November. Some benefits of trekking during this time are stable weather, pleasant daytime temperatures, and dry trails.
This time of the year provides the best opportunities to witness breathtaking mountain vistas from both the trekking trail and the sky.
There’s no problem finding a good guesthouse for food and accommodation during the Everest Base Camp Trek. All stopovers have well-built teahouses offering an array of services, such as good food, accommodation, hot showers, and Wi-Fi.
You can find normal teahouses everywhere. However, luxury options are only available until Tengboche, starting in Lukla.
Food options in the teahouses include main courses for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For breakfast, you have options for bread, eggs, biscuits, parathas, and others.
For lunch, you will have Nepali traditional Dal Bhat, Chowmein, momos, noodles, spaghetti, etc. For dinner, you either repeat the same as in lunch or have pizza, vegetable curry, Nepali rice, lentils, and more.
The teahouse room will be basic, with twin single beds and a small table. In the bed, you will have a small pillow, a mattress, a blanket, and a bedsheet.
You will get attached toilet rooms for the first three days of your EBC hike. After Day 4, you will have a common toilet outside of the teahouse room.
